Move-Out Cleaning Tips for Students

Welcome (or welcome back) to Denton, home of coffee shops, live music, and of course, two amazing universities: UNT and TWU. Whether you’re a freshman moving into your very first dorm, a grad student juggling research and ramen, or a proud parent helping your kid settle into their first off-campus apartment, there’s one thing everyone has in common: cleaning.

And no, we don’t just mean shoving everything under the bed before your roommate’s parents visit.

At Denton Maids, we know a thing or two about keeping Denton homes spotless (our company colors are inspired by UNT for a reason… Go Mean Green! 💚). So we’ve put together some practical, college-life-approved cleaning tips for moving in or moving out of your space this semester. And, on a slightly different note, if you’re looking for ways to keep your studies on track too, check out these proven studying tips: From Failing Freshman to Graduating With Honors: A Guide to Academic Triumph.

🧹 Move-In Cleaning Tips (a.k.a. “How to Make Sure Your Apartment or Dorm Isn’t Gross”)

Let’s be real, just because an apartment or dorm “looks” clean doesn’t mean it actually is. Before you unpack those boxes, take a little time to give the place a once-over.

  • Hit the high-touch spots. Wipe down doorknobs, light switches, and cabinet handles. Think of how many hands have touched them before you. Yep. Ew.
  • Sanitize the fridge. Because mystery stains in the crisper drawer are not a vibe.
  • Bathroom first. Scrub the toilet, sink, and shower before you even think about stepping in barefoot. Trust us.
  • Vacuum and mop. Floors collect everything — dust, hair, and whatever the last tenant dropped during finals week.

👉 Bonus Tip: Light a candle or plug in an air freshener. “Dorm Room Mustiness” is not a scent Bath & Body Works will be releasing anytime soon.

📦 Move-Out Cleaning Tips (a.k.a. “How to Get Your Deposit Back”)

Fast-forward a semester or two: it’s time to move out. You want that security deposit back (because pizza money > losing hundreds to your landlord).

  • Patch and scrub. Fill nail holes, wipe scuffs off walls, and clean baseboards.
  • Kitchen check. Degrease the oven, clean the microwave (yes, even the spaghetti sauce explosion), and wipe inside cabinets.
  • Bathroom sparkle. Scrub grout, mirrors, and fixtures until they shine.
  • Floors again. Vacuum, sweep, and mop like your deposit depends on it. (Because it does.)

👉 Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to empty all the closets. You don’t want your landlord finding that random hoodie you lost freshman year.

🎉 Denton-Specific Hacks

  • Allergies are real. Denton in the fall = ragweed and dust galore. Dusting blinds and vacuuming often can save you from sneezing through your lectures.
  • Roommate approved. Set up a simple cleaning schedule with your roommates. (Yes, group chats can be used for things besides memes and pizza orders.)
  • Game Day Ready. If you’re hosting friends for a UNT football watch party, wipe down surfaces and stock up on paper towels. Salsa happens.
