Wow! Our 11 Month in Business…

We’re in our eleventh month and about to celebrate our first anniversary. Business is booming, so I thought I’d share a bit about our journey, how we started, and where we’re headed.

It all began when a business broker contacted Greg of Dallas Maids with information on a commercial cleaning business that was for sale. The owner was a gentleman named Troy. Troy, exhausted from running the business and eager to pursue an opportunity in HVAC, wanted out. Greg, intrigued, jotted down the number and gave Troy a call.

Troy explained his situation: running a business is tough, especially with a family to support. Although Greg found owning a business to be a rewarding experience, he understood Troy’s struggle. Greg fondly remembered the advice he received when he started in 2004 and was eager to pass on his 20 years of knowledge to Troy. Despite Greg’s willingness to offer tips on creating business systems and growing the company, Troy remained set on leaving the cleaning industry.

Troy was passionate about HVAC and found it more promising. Greg encouraged him to follow his passion, but after several conversations, they decided to join forces instead. And so, Denton Maids was born.

Recognizing the need for a quality house cleaning service in Denton, Greg and Troy got to work. They set up the business office, launched the website, registered Denton Maids as a limited liability corporation, and opened a business bank account. Next up was recruiting.

The key to a successful business is finding good people. Over two decades, Greg had perfected a hiring process to find honest, competent individuals: A strong work ethic and good hearts; You can’t have one without the other. In the cleaning industry, these traits are essential since families trust us with their biggest investment: Their home!

As they took care of the usual business setup tasks, Greg focused on optimizing dentonmaids.com for search engines. His advice for aspiring SEO enthusiasts: Be honest and genuine. Google rewards websites that provide genuine value. Avoid manipulative tactics—Google will catch on. SEO isn’t complicated, and doing it yourself will yield better results than hiring an agency. After about eight months, their efforts paid off. Calls for cleaning services started pouring in. With the addition of Mary, our customer service extraordinaire, and an amazing cleaning staff, Denton Maids was ready to shine.

Top Ten-ish things I’ve learned in Business!

1. If everything is perfect by the time you launch, you’ve launched too late.

2. Being cheap often ends up being the most expensive choice you make for your business, you either pay upfront or you pay more on the backend, but you’re going to pay.

3. The more research and planning you do to prepare yourself for launching your business, the less likely you are to launch.

4. There will come a point where growing your business will require you to fire a bunch of customers. It’s a glorious thing. Celebrate.

5. All things being equal, the more options you offer customers, the less likely they are to make a purchase.Offer fewer choices.

6. Build businesses that don’t scale. You can take care of yourself and your family with a “but will it scale?” business, while you wait for your unicorn (which most probably isn’t happening anyhow).

7. A $100 customer isn’t 10 times the effort to find as a $10 customer. Could as well up the value and price with more confidence.

8. Your “About Me” page isn’t really about you. It should be renamed the “Can I create enough trust to overcome objections” page. Write from that angle.

9. Run ads to Sales page. 😬 Run ads to content, link from content to sales page…

10. You can always find a list of things you need to work through first before opening the doors to customers. And I’m here to say, that list is almost always b.s. You can’t win from the sidelines.

11. Eat your veggies..but not asparagus, that’s trash!!!
